9/11 Health Panel Seeks Public Input on Cancer

LOWER MANHATTAN — A panel of medical experts will soon decide whether the federal government’s $2.8 billion 9/11 health fund should cover cancer — and they want to hear from the public before making a decision.

The World Trade Center Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee is asking Downtown residents, first responders and others to weigh in on whether those who got cancer after being exposed to 9/11 toxins ought to be compensated for their illness.

Written comments are due Wednesday, and those who want to speak directly to the committee can participate in a conference call Jan. 24. The committee will also hold a public meeting in New York City in February, but details about the hearing haven’t been confirmed.

Catherine McVay Hughes, vice chairwoman of Community Board 1 and a member of the WTC Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee, encourages as many people as possible to make their voices heard.

$2.8B fund to aid 9/11 victims taking applications

NEW YORK — The newly reopened September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of $2.8 billion will start taking applications Monday.

The fund is intended to help people who became ill after working at ground zero and others whose sicknesses can be tied to the site. Residents, workers and others can apply, including those whose claims to the first fund were denied.

“Everybody who is eligible should apply for this,” said John Feal, a leading advocate for injured first responders.

The deadline for applying for help is Oct. 3, 2013, or two years from the time a person learns that a physical injury or sickness resulted from exposure to ground zero. The program will run for six years.

Congress established the fund after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It operated for two years, giving $6 billion to victims’ families and $1 billion to the injured. Last year, Congress passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to reopen the fund and provide additional help to people affected by the disaster and its aftermath.

The new federal law allocated $2.8 billion for compensation and $1.5 billion for medical monitoring and care.

Zone for 9/11 Compensation in Lower Manhattan Is Expanded

Zone for 9/11 Compensation in Lower Manhattan Is Expanded

Chinatown has been added to an area where people sickened after exposure to the toxic cloud are eligible for financial help, but Brooklyn was not.

The expansion of the coverage area means that people in Chinatown and other neighborhoods below Canal Street in Manhattan will be eligible to apply for compensation from the fund, a change that had been sought by groups that had pushed Congress to create the fund.

The previously recognized 9/11 site was the portion of Lower Manhattan south of Reade Street. Ms. Birnbaum rejected requests to include parts of Brooklyn in the zone.

9/11 First Responders With Cancer – No Government Aid

Cancer-stricken emergency workers who responded to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and cancer victims who resided in the area do not qualify for federal aid, according to a review by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

NIOSH concluded that “insufficient evidence exists at this time to propose a rule to add cancer, or a certain type of cancer,” to the list of diseases that qualify for aid under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Elkhart business teams up with artist to remember victims of 9/11

Elkhart business teams up with artist to remember victims of 9/11.

by artist Jon Krawczyk.

Remember 911

ELKHART — September 11 is a day Americans will never forget. An Elkhart business is helping preserve the names of all the victims ten years later. The business teamed up with a California artist to remember 9-11.

Nearly 3,000 names of 9-11 victims are etched on stainless steel pages.

“It’s really overwhelming,” said Leanne Brekke of Indiana Micro Metal Etching. “So make sure you get a chance to look at the book and think about all those people and their families.”

Indiana Micro Metal Etching in Elkhart is putting finishing touches on the book, which will end up in New York City beneath a 14-foot tall steel cross.

California Artist John Krawczyk created the cross for St. Peter’s Cathedral, a church next to Ground Zero.

“What makes our nation great is we’re a nation filled with people from all different parts of the world – tall people, short people, different colors, different races, different religions,” said Krawczyk. “And that day everybody came together as one nation, so that’s what this represents to me.”

Krawczyk is taking the 500-pound cross on a 3,000 mile journey across the country. This summer, it will be put on display at St. Peter’s Cathedral, along with the book of names made in Elkhart.

“We’re really proud to be a part of it,” said Brekke.

Remembering first responders of 9/11 This Memorial Day

Its been nearly 10 years after the events of 9/11 and the terrorist attacks that devastated our country. Manhattan Injury Law would like to take this moment to remember those who lost their lives that day, their loved ones, and the heroism of the firemen and policemen who first responded.

The anniversary of Sept. 11 will not be forgotten:

•For those alive that day, 9/11 will live on simply because it was so perversely spectacular. Four jet planes were hijacked that day, deliberately crashing into the nation’s two biggest skyscrapers and its military headquarters. Then the skyscrapers collapsed — in view of a worldwide television audience.

•We will never forget the shocking images of that tragic day, 9/11. A jetliner hitting a skyscraper, office workers leaping to their deaths, pedestrians fleeing a huge black cloud.

What do you remember that day. Please post your thoughts and memories.

WE WONT FORGET!

City’s 9/11 Insurer Attempting To Deny Responders Payment…

NEW YORK, Feb. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Mayor Bloomberg’s hired guns and The WTC Insurance Co., Inc., the specially-created insurance carrier for claims by 9/11 First Responders against the City of New York, filed a motion Monday that seeks to have the Court deny Ground Zero claimants an additional “incentive” payment of $37.5 million that they are entitled to receive under the Settlement Agreement that resolves their litigation, based on a claimed technicality in the agreement.

The City’s motion asks the Court to set aside its own prior order dismissing claims by non-responsive plaintiffs. These ordered dismissals, according to the Court’s prior order, would reduce the number of plaintiffs entitled to claim a settlement in the litigation, thus increasing the relative percent of claimants who opted in to the settlement. The settlement agreement provides that each percent point of plaintiffs opting in to the settlement over the threshold of 95% increases the overall payments by millions of additional dollars.
